Strong rail system key to U.S. growth

U.S. railroads were 144% more efficient in 2008 than in 1980, according to the Association of American Railroads, the industry's trade group. In 2008, they carried, on average, a ton of freight 457 miles on one gallon of diesel fuel, up 5% from 436 miles just a year earlier. And the association claims that if just 10% of the freight that now moves by truck were moved to the rails, the USA would burn 1 billion fewer gallons of fuel a year. Read more...
China To Connect Its High Speed Rail All The Way To Europe

With initial negotiations and surveys already complete, China is now making plans to connect its HSR line through 17 other countries in Asia and Eastern Europe in order to connect to the existing infrastructure in the EU. Additional rail lines will also be built into South East Asia as well as Russia, in what will likely become the largest infrastructure project in history. Read more...

NS Intermodal Facility awarded $52.5M TIGER Grant.

Norfolk Southern’s planned Birmingham Regional Intermodal Facility was awarded $52.5 million from the Department of Transportation under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. Norfolk Southern announced that it intended to construct a new intermodal terminal in McCalla, AL, as part of the railroad’s multi-state $2.5 billion Crescent Corridor program of projects to establish a high-speed intermodal freight rail route linking the Gulf Coast and the Northeast.
