Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway said Tuesday it will buy railroad operator Burlington Northern Santa Fe for $44 billion. Berkshire (BRKA, Fortune 500), which already has major stake in the company, said it would acquire the remaining 77.4% of the company in a cash-and-stock offer worth $100 per share. Read more...

UP announces joint chemical service with CSX, NS

A day after Union Pacific Railroad announced it launched an expedited chemical service with Norfolk Southern Railway, the Class I said it formed a new expedited chemical service with CSX Transportation, Progressive Railroading reported. The joint UP-NS "RailChem Connect" service will target chemicals moving between Texas' Gulf Coast region and the Southeast, such as through Houston, southern Texas and Louisiana. Read more...

CN said it will acquire 35 ES44DC locomotives from GE starting in the fourth quarter of 2010, and 35 SD70M-2s from EMD beginning in January 2011. CN said it is looking to increase fuel efficiency, improving service reliability and reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Read more...

CSX Earnings Fall, Says Worst Of Recession Is Over

CSX Corp., the nation's third largest railroad, said Tuesday it believes the worst of the recession is over, but its third-quarter earnings fell 23 percent from a year ago because shipping demand is still weak. The stock was up 3 percent in aftermarket trading at $45.27. It closed down 63 cents to end the regular session at $44.28. CSX shares have risen over 36 percent in the last three months, peaking at $48.17 on Sept. 10. Read more...

Railroad debuts zero-emissions locomotive

Norfolk Southern Corp. has unveiled an electric-powered locomotive, fueled by a 1,500-horsepower system made up of 1,080 12-volt batteries. With the help of a system provided by Brookville Equipment Co., the locomotive is able to recharge its batteries while braking. Because there is no diesel engine, there are zero exhaust emissions. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger requested $4.7 billion in federal stimulus money Friday to help build an 800-mile bullet train system from San Diego to San Francisco. 'We're traveling on our trains at the same speed as 100 years ago,' the governor said. 'That is inexcusable. America must catch up.' Planners said the train would be able to travel from Los Angeles to San Francisco in two hours and 40 minutes, traveling at speeds of more than 200 miles per hour. Read more...
